  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

My lesson from all of this is that I need to allow holidays to take whatever form they take in my adult life.

I've had similar feelings about my birthday the last few years. When I make plans for it I inevitably end up disappointed, but when I'm more laid back about it and treat it as a day to just do whatever I feel like doing in the moment, it turns out being a really lovely day. :)
